Online Experiment

Following are some online studies about number processing in 12 different languages. Each study takes about 20 minutes and with participating in any of them you can also participate in a lottery for ten 20 Euro Amazon vouchers. However, you must be 18 years old or over to participate in this study. Participation is completely voluntary and you have the right to withdraw at any time.

Experiment 1: Cultural and educational variations of the compatibility effect

This study consists of a series of number comparison tasks. You will be shown two numbers for each comparison and should indicate which number you think is larger by pressing either the up arrow key for the top number or the down arrow key for the bottom number. Detailed instructions will be shown before the task.

Experiment 2: Cultural and educational variations of the SNARC effect

This study consists of a series of number tasks. For each task in the first and second parts of the experiment, you should indicate whether the number presented on the screen is even or odd by using the left and right arrow keys on the keyboard. For the parts three and four, you should indicate whether the number is smaller or larger than the number 5 by using the same keys. Detailed instructions will be shown before the task.

Experiment 3: Cultural and educational variations in the approximate number system

This study consists of a series of different short tasks. The first is an attention task, which requires you to respond to the direction of the central arrow. The memory task will require you to respond to whether the current letter is the same or different as the letter that appeared two letters ago. The mathematical task requires you to verify subtraction and multiplication solutions. The number comparison task and the magnitude comparison task, require you to compare the magnitude of two numbers or two dot patterns respectively.
